We love our sewing machines! But, sometimes it can feel like they don’t love us back! When you’re sewing it is common to run in to problems with your sewing machine. Often these can be user error or a simple fix, but sometimes they can be something a little more sinister. A common culprit of problems is a build up of dust and lint in your machine, have a little look at the video above to see just how much fluff gets in there! A regular service once or twice a year will help to keep your machine sewing smoothly and keep the build up of dust under control.
Here are some other tips on caring for your sewing machine to help avoid sewing issues:
1. Read the Manual
Your sewing machine’s manual is your best friend! It contains specific instructions and recommendations tailored to your machine model. Familiarize yourself with the manual to understand the proper usage, cleaning, and maintenance routines.
2. Clean Your Machine Regularly
As you van see from the video fabric lint, dust, and thread bits can accumulate inside your sewing machine, especially around the bobbin case and feed dogs. Here’s how to clean it:
Unplug the machine for safety.
Remove the needle, presser foot, and throat plate.
Use a small brush or compressed air to clean out lint and debris.
Wipe the exterior with a soft, damp cloth.
3. Change Needles Frequently
Don’t underestimate the power of a new needle! A dull or bent needle can damage your fabric and machine. Replace your needle after every 8-10 hours of sewing or when switching to a different type of fabric. Keep a variety of needles on hand for different projects. For our clothing alterations we have regular needles for medium weight fabrics, heavy weight needles for jeans and tough things, and fine needles for bridal and prom dresses - we switch needles for each different garment!
4. Check your Bobbins
there are different sizes and shapes of bobbins. Check that you are using the correct one for your machine and that it is being wound tightly and evenly. This will help avoid problems such as skipping stitches and dodgy tension!
5. Oil Your Machine (If Required)
Some sewing machines require regular oiling to run smoothly. Consult your manual to determine if your machine needs oil and the recommended type. Apply only a few drops in the specified areas and wipe away excess oil to prevent staining fabric. Be careful not to over oil as this can be very bad! If you are having your machine serviced regularly then you probably don’t need to oil it.
6. Keep It Covered
When not in use, cover your sewing machine to protect it from dust and sunlight. Use a fabric or hard cover designed for your model.
7. Avoid Overloading Your Machine
Don’t force thick layers of fabric through your machine. Use the appropriate presser foot, needle, and settings for heavy materials, and sew slowly to avoid jamming. Ease the stitches over thicker sections slowly, using your hand wheel.
Caring for your sewing machine doesn’t require much time but pays off with smoother sewing sessions and longer machine life. By incorporating these maintenance tips into your routine, you’ll ensure that your sewing machine remains a reliable companion for all your sewing adventures!
